Who were The Smiths?
The Smiths were a group from Manchester formed in 1978 by Guitarist and Songwriter Johnny Marr and lead singer Morrisey. The pair forged a song writing partnership that would see the band produce 6 studio albums before they went their separate ways. With Andy Rourke on the bass and Mike Joyce on drums, they were ready to roll.
In 1983, they signed with Rough Trade Records. It was with Rough Trade that they released their self-titled debut album, The Smiths in 1984. The Smiths created their own Sound which contrasted the Synth Pop that was the musical style of the day. They stuck to an organic Drum, Bass and Guitar sound instead of electronic substitutes. They fused the Post-Punk sound with 1960’s Rock.
The Smiths had a good run with several UK Top 20 Hit singles. All of their albums reached the Top 5 in the UK Album Chart. Their Second album, Meat is Murder hit the UK Number One in the album Chart in 1985. The briefly recruited as a Second Guitarist in 1986. But the band began to split up due to clashes in personalities and in 1987, the Smiths formerly finished. Any animosity the members may have had for each other at this time was only escalated by a bitter legal dispute over royalties.
