Who were Slade?
Slade were a Rock band from Birmingham, England. Originally formed in 1966 as the N’Betweens. They were originally a Skinhead band. This was back in the days of the Original Skinheads who were a mixed crew of both Black and White Youths. The group built a following and kept busy playing the local Circuit with their own versions of contemporary rock covers and obscure U.S. R&B tunes. They soon struck a deal with Fontana Records under the name Ambrose Slade
In 1969, the group teamed up with Animals bass player Chas Chandler who had previously managed Jimi Hendrix. He convinced the band to shorten their name to Slade and promoted them as a Skinhead band. But they didnt have much success in that niche.
So they grew their hair and adopted the Glam Rock style of Bright colourful clothing and big hair. This brought them success with ‘”Get Down With It.” which reached Number 16 in the UK Singles Chart. This was soon followed by the Number One “Coz I Luv. “They embarked upon a five-year run of chart hits in the UK and were massive in Europe and even in Australia they were a success.
However, the group didnt do so well in the United States., although they were known to be a big influence on 80’s Glam Rock band KISS. It wasn’t until the early 1980’s that they had any U.S success with the singles “My Oh My” and “Run Runaway.” The sudden interest in Slade in the states at this time came from the U>S Number One hit from Quiet Riot covering ‘Cum on Feel the Noize’ and ‘Mama, we’re all Crazee Now’.
