The Elusive Bob Dylan

In the video here, we see Bob Dylan sitting down in San Francisco City hall surrounded by reporters and Photographers. All of them desperate to Interview Dylan or get a few snaps of him on their cameras. This was because the singer-songwriter was a big interest to the music press at the time. This was due to the musician’s choice to go electric.

His recent album ‘Bringing it all back home’ was his first album he recorded using Electric instruments. When he First stepped on stage with an electric guitar on his world tour the following year, he was Booed by the crowd. One famous incident was at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England. A Member of the audience yelled “Judas!” at him. Dylan replied smoothly “I dont beleive you! You’re a Liar!”.

What made Bob Dylan so Famous in 1965?

This Interview took place in between the album release and the world tour. So most fans had only heard him play electric, but hadn’t yet saw him play electric yet. Of course, this was long before the days of the trusty worldwide web where we can get Info super-duper quick. Back then, everyone was waiting for word from the music Press and rumours were flying high. Was it true that Dylan had sold out? Was he Really playing electric?’. So, as you can imagine, the interest in the star was very high with the music press.

Bob Dylan was born Robert Zimmerman in small-town Hibbing Minnesota in 1941. He’d had an interest in playing music since he was a teenager and had played in a Rock n Roll band with his friends back home. But Dylan wanted to play to the world. So armed with his acoustic guitar, a love for the old folk songs of Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly and an imagination, he soon headed for New York city. Here he soon found himself playing regular gigs around Greenwich Village.

The Folk Singer

In 1962, Bob Dylan released his self-titled debut album. This album consisted almost wholly of cover songs of old folk songs and Woody Guthrie numbers. However, it did Include his own ‘Song to Woody’ which he’d originally wrote as a gift to his Folk Hero Woody Guthrie. He had visited the aged Folk Singer in Hospital whilst in New York. He was a big fan of Guthrie’s music and this was reflected in his own music.

His Second Album, The Freewheelin Bob Dylan’ released in 1963 was mainly his own compositions. But these were in the same style as Woody Guthrie. His Third Album ‘The Times They Are a Changin’ was a huge hit and consisted wholly of the artists own original material.

What Kind of Music Does Dylan Play?

Bob Dylan’s music is He describes his music as Symphonies of different melodies. One on Top of the other. Different changes, with or without words.

Bob Dylan has often been described as ‘Folk-Rock’ but in the interview, he denies this. He describes his music as ‘Vision Music’ and ‘Mathematical Music’. He was asked whether he considers himself primarily to be a Singer or a Poet. But Dylan replied ‘I’m a Song n Dance man, ya know”. When he was asked by a reporter what he defines as ‘Folk Music’, Dylan replied “A Constitutional Replay of Mass Production”.

Dylanology and The Music Press

Over the years, Bob Dylan has had no shortage of obsessed Fans and has had numerous Biographies written about him. Many artists have also covered his songs and many claim to have been influenced by Dylan.

When asked what he thinks of people who analyse his songs, Dylan replies that he welcomes them. Of course, this for Bob has been a big thing as many ‘Dylanologists’ over the years have studied the singers life and work vigorously. Although, there was a famous incident where he obviously had enough. Whilst taking some garbage out, he found a reporter raking through his garbage and decked him.

A spokesman for a Generation?

Bob Dylan has often been hailed as the Spokesman for a generation. But he has always shrugged this role off. He has often played up the mysterious act. But in a later Interview in 1985, Dylan says ‘I just write songs and wanna get by. Just like everyone else I guess. Everyone’s just tryna get by”

When asked if he considers himself a politician, he said “I am a Politician. I have my own party. But they dont have any President, Vice President or Secretaries or anything like that. So it’s pretty hard to find a way in. I dont think it would be approved by the Whitehouse or anything like that though”.
