The Legend who was Matt McGinn

Matt McGinn was born in just off the Gallowgate in the Colton area of Glasgow in January, 1928. Born into a family of Nine, McGinn grew up in the are which was rich in Irish culture. This where he hoovered up many of the tunes often chanted with a mixture of colourful sectarian overtones and made them his own.

Although he was never to play a musical Instrument, and in some opinions, couldn’t sing either, McGinn wrote some amazing lyrics which he put with these tunes. His lyrics addressed social and political issues, yet he had a skill of being able to make them comedy, child friendly songs.

The Politician

McGinn was expelled from Primary school and sent to approved school as a child. However, this was no reflection on his intelligence. At age 31, he obtained a Trade Union Scholarship to the Ruskin College in Oxford. Here he saw how society really worked. After a brief period as a school teacher, his beleifs were solidified and McGinn returned to Glasgow, vowing never to work again. However, Matt was a an enthusiastic campaigner for local social and housing issues and helped establish the Gorbals Adventure Playground.

In 1962, Matt won a song writing competition with his song ‘The Foreman O’Rourke’ which earned him a place at the Carnegie Hall. Here he met a young Bob Dylan and the American Folk Singer and Songwriter Pete Seeger whom he would forge a lasting Friendship with. Matt McGinn was a member of the Communist Party of great Britain and was a committed Socialist, trade unionist and a keen observer of nature which reflected in his songs.

Being a father himself, he was great at writing children’s songs too. He was really good fusing these components together to make songs that can be understood by all ages with an appreciative meaning as one grows older. However, in the 1960’s Britain and America were still in the height of the Cold War and while McGinn was a big name in the Folk Revival scene, he was limited in his publicised and very few TV appearances of Matt McGinn in his life and one from his early era.

The Entertainer

As the 1970’s came along, the songs McGinn sang had started to become less of a threat to the status Quo and the singer had also adopted a more humorous approach to his material. This live show here is a prime example of Matt McGinn the entertainer. It was recorded in the singers latter years. But it has no shortage of humorous jokes and the craic which Matt was always good at. In fact, he was often considered the Mentor of his banjo Player Billy Connolly who would later go on to become a world famous Stand Up comedian.

Sadly Matt McGinn passed away in 1978. Unfortunately his home in Govan hill in Glasgow’s South Side suffered a fire when matt came home drunk one night and fell asleep in bed with a cigarette. He died in the fire and was pronounced dead by smoke inhalation at age 50.

The Legacy

Matt McGinn’s works are still very much celebrated and many musicians and songwriters including myself can say that McGinn was a big Influence on them. McGinn’s songs are still performed by folk musicians on both sides of the Atlantic. In Scotland and in America at tribute concerts. His songs have been recorded by Pete Seeger, The Weavers, Theodore Bikel, The Corries, Luke Kelly, The Chinese Man, The Ian Campbell Folk Group, Barry Dransfield & Rachel Unthank and the Winterset, among others.

Chumbawamba on The John Peel Show on the 2nd of August, 1992

Here’s a little rare Gem from one of the greatest Anarcho Punk bands Chumbawamba playing a live set on John Peels studio on the 2nd of August 1992. They were asked by the BBC to participate on the show. The Beeb obviously thought they were gonna get a free pillage of their political songs, twist them and murder them like they usually do. Instead the band took them to the Fairground with this.

Chumbawamba ◾ The John Peel Show ◾ 2nd of August, 1992

The Tunes They Played

  1. Knock Three Times.
  2. The Birdie Song
  3. Viva Espana
  4. Agadoo

Who Were Chumbawamba?

Chumbawamba were an Anarcho-Punk music group from the town of  Burnley in the North of England. They were originally formed in the 1980s by a group of friends. They had all been living together in Squats and so decided to put a band together. It was a bit of a Mish mash to begin with and they never really settled on a name for the first while. Instead, they play under different names from gig to gig. Their style would also rotate from gig to gig. Both the music and performance. They are almost like a travelling stage show circus.

Chumbawamba consisted of Alice Nutter, Danbert No-Bacon, Dunstan Bruce, Daz Hamer, Mave Dillon , Lou Watts., Jude, off Whalley  and  Simon Lanzon. However, their members have come and gone over the years. Sometimes they’d have members for one show Only. They’d also have guest appearances on stage with them in many of their live shows. The band release their debut album ‘History Luddite’ in 1984 on Crass records. Following the DIY ethic of Punk like their Anarcho-Punk predecessors Crass, the group recorded on their own label. Singing lyrics with strong political opinion and message.

For most of the groups existence, they’ve been out of the mainstream as their lyrics are too political for that. The mainstream doesn’t want music that makes people think. It doesn’t help encourage the Idiocracy that Mainstream Music Industry fuels. However, they did get a Top Ten hit with their Chart busting song ‘Tubthumping’ in 1997. Sadly, this is the song that people best remember Chumbawamba for. But really, it’s their crappest. All it did was sing about someone falling on their ass and getting up again. Singing “They ain’t ever gonna keep me down” it’s hardly deep. But that’s the mainstream for ya I guess.

Chumbawamba on the BBC

In 1992, Chumbawamba were asked to come into the BBC studios in Maida Vale and perform a live set on the Peel Sessions. These were live sessions done by the late and legendary John Peel who hosted the long running John Peel Show. He would often host live acts on the show and do live studio sessions. However, you may or not know that when a group does a Live session the BBC studios, then the music belongs to the BBC. Not to the group. But Chumbawamba weren’t about to be suckered I to giving their music to the BBC to cannibalise.

So, they decided to go into the studio and play their usual Anarcho songs, they decided to play this little Medley of Spanish Holiday stroke Butlins music. A wee bit of this and a wee bit of that and a wee bit of this and shake yer arse.

I’m The Urban spaceman by The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band

Here’s a little classic video from the 1960s. It’s the Bonzo Dog Doo Dahh Band performing The Urban Spaceman on German Television. The Bonzo’s stage shows were just as much their art as the music was and they pulled off some great shows.

I’m The Urban spaceman by The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band

Lyrics to I’m The Urban Spaceman

I’m the urban spaceman, baby; I’ve got speed
I’ve got everything I need
I’m the urban spaceman, baby; I can fly
I’m a supersonic guy

I don’t need pleasure
I don’t feel pain
If you were to knock me down I’d just get up again
I’m the urban spaceman, baby, I’m Makin’ out
I’m all about

I wake up every morning with a smile upon my face
My natural exuberance spills out all over the place

I’m the urban spaceman, I’m intelligent and clean
Know what I mean?
I’m the urban spaceman, as a lover second to none
It’s a lot of fun

I never let my friends down
I’ve never made a boob
I’m a glossy magazine, an advert in the tube

I’m the urban spaceman, baby; here

The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band.

The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band were a bunch of Art students from England who performed throughout the 1960s. They were initially Jazz musicians but branched off into Rock n Roll, trad jazz and psychedelic pop with surreal humour and avant-garde art. They came to the public attention through a 1968 ITV comedy show, Do Not Adjust Your Set.

The group was originally formed in 1963 by eccentric Artist, singer-Songwriter and Musician Vivian Stanshall and Saxophonist Rodney Slater in 1962. With the help of Chris Jennings on Trombone, Tom Parkinson on Sousaphone, Sam Spoons on Drums, Bob Kerr on Trumpet and Trevor Brown on Banjo, along with music student Neil Innes on Guitar and Vocals, they made the band that would influence many artists for years to come.

When you listen to their music, one could be forgiven for mistaking it for music from Kids TV. However, the group were even offered the Job of being the Public face of The New Vaudeville Band. This was a concept of produces Geoff Stevens who had written a handful of songs including The 1967 hit Winchester Cathedral and the 1968 follow up hit ‘Finchley Central ‘. However, Most of the group refused to do it. They wanted to maintain their own show. But Bob Kerr left the band temporarily to participate in the project.

The Bonzo Dog doo Dah Band

The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band were a Jazz, Rock band from England. They were formed in 1963 by musician Viv Stanshall. They created their own kinda Looney Toon sound and delivered some brilliant stage performances at the live shows they played across the Northern England Working Men’s club circuit. The group had Five successful albums. However, they disbanded in 1970.

The group also made quite a few Live TV Appearances as well as providing the sound track for various Television programmes. However, their most famous on screen appearance was probably The Beatles movie The Magical Mystery Tour which they were asked to appear in by Paul McCartney who was a good friend of Stanshall’s. They were also asked to stand in for Geoff Stephen’s 1968 concept The New Vaudeville Band on Top of the Pop’s for their hit ‘Winchester Cathedral. But they turned this down. Sure it would have gave them an Instant hit but they chose to stick to their own material.

What Did You think?

Well, what did you think of that then for something a little different? Perhaps not everyone’s cup of tea but I always find the Bonzo’s pleasant to the ears. They just have that funny sound to them which you cant help but like. What did you think? We’d love to read your thoughts ad opinions on this album in the comments below.
