Bob Dylan – Pretty Peggy O’ at Carnegie Chapter Hall, 1961

Lyrics

I’ve been around this whole country
But I never yet found Fennario

Well, as we marched down, as we marched down
As we marched down to Fennerio’
Well, our captain fell in love with a lady like a dove
The name that she had was pretty Peggy-O

Well, what will your mother say, what will your mother say?
What will your mother say, pretty Peggy-O?
What will your mother say to know you’re going away?
You’re never, never, never coming back-io?

Come a-running down your stairs
Come a-running down your stairs
Oh Come a-running down your stairs, pretty Peggy-O
Come a-running down your stairs
Combing back your yellow hair
You’re the prettiest darned girl I ever seen-io

The lieutenant he has gone
The lieutenant he has gone
Yes, The lieutenant he has gone, pretty Peggy-O
The lieutenant he has gone, long gone
He’s a-riding down in Texas with the rodeo

Well, our captain he is dead, our captain he is dead
Our captain he is dead, pretty Peggy-O
Well, our captain he is dead, died for a maid
He’s buried somewhere in Louisiana-O

Bob Dylan at Carnegie Chapter Hall 1961

On the 4th of November 1961, Bob Dylan played to a room of 57 people in a quiet 5th floor function room at Carnegie Chapter hall, a annex of the legendary Carnegie Hall. This would be the American Folk singers First proper Concert. He’d played many little venues. But this was his first big one. Although, I guess it looks miniscule in comparison to his future shows. This was just a few weeks after he’d signed with Columbia records. This was very quiet. But it wouldn’t stay that long for the young Dylan. he was literally unheard of at this point. But he’d soon become world famous.

There’s been bootlegs of this gig in circulation for many years. However, most of them were poor quality with many missing tracks. But, there was recently a much clearer version uploaded by the awesome Swinging Pig Channel on YouTube. However, this track had to be omitted from the upload for Copyright reasons. But all is not lost. We have it right here.
