Who were Bauhaus?

Considered one of the originators of gothic rock, Bauhaus is a band from Northampton, England who formed in 1978 and influenced many future artists and groups with their dark ad gloomy sound and image. The band was made up of  of Daniel Ash on guitar and saxophone, Peter Murphy on vocals and occasional instruments, Kevin Haskins on drums and David J on the bass.

The group originally named themselves Bauhaus 1919 after the Famous German art school that opened that year but was closed in 1933 due to pressure from the Nazi regime. But they quickly shortened the name and released their debut single ‘Bela Lugosi’s Dead’ in 1979. This probably the bands best known song and often referred to by many artists as influential to their music. Their debut album In the Flat Field the following year is often considered by many as the First Goth rock album.

The group expanded their sound on their Second album Mask released in 1981 by adding more keyboards and special effects. This gave the band a series of Top Ten hits including Kick in the Eye. In 1983, Bauhaus had success with their Third album The Sky’s gone Out reaching Number 3 in the UK album chart and also had an appearance on the hit show Top of the Pops with a cover of Bowies Ziggy Stardust which went down well.

Sadly due to a mix of Illnesses and in-fighting between members, the band split up on the 5th of July, 1983. The following week, their Third and final album Burning from the Inside was released, giving the group another Top 30 hit with the single ‘She’s in Parties’

Recent Years

After the group disbanded, members worked on various different solo projects of their own. The band has reformed a few times in recent years for short period ad tours. The most recent of these would be in March 20222 when they released the single ‘Drink the New Wine’. This was their first single in over 14 years and sold well. It was all recorded by each artist separately during the COVID pandemic. So none of the other members could hear what their fellow members were playing until they put the whole album together.
